The recent warmer weather reminds us that winter is never permanent. Between now and summer, we will have a few more bouts of colder weather. However, before you know it, people will be back diving in the springs and Gulf. Will you be ready? Here are some steps you should take to prepare for the coming dive season.
Get your gear serviced now
Once April and May roll around, divers rush to get their equipment serviced before the dive season begins. This leads to a backup in our service department that forces people to wait before getting their gear back and getting in the water.
Don’t be one of them. Get your regulator, BC and dive computer into our service department now while demand is low. You will get your gear back in days instead of weeks and be diving while others are stuck on shore.
Clear the cobwebs
If it’s been a while since you were last in the water, you will want to make sure your knowledge and skills are current. At the very least, take advantage of the opportunity afforded by our Saturday afternoon open pool times. Here you can get in the pool and practice essential skills. It can make a difference. The cost is $35, plus $10 if you need equipment.
If it has been a year or more since you last dived, you will want to participate in one of our Scuba Skills Updates. These take place on the second Saturday of every month. Our next is March 11. Here you will work with one of our instructors to ensure critical knowledge and skills are what they should be.
If several years or more have passed since you last dove, consider re-taking the Open Water Diver course. The last several years have seen tremendous advances in training and equipment. You don’t want to jeopardize your safety and enjoyment by not being totally up to date.
Advance yourself
Among the best ways to ensure you are ready for diving in the springs and Gulf is to take part in one or more Advanced and Specialty Diver courses. Programs such as Deep, Wreck and Underwater Imaging not only help prepare you for the season ahead, but they are also enjoyable activities all by themselves.
Despite the colder weather, you can do the academic and pool portion of these courses now. Then, when the weather turns warmer, you can make the dives required for full certification in these areas. You will have fun every step of the way.
