Where do classes take place?
Having our own pool makes it so much better
All of our classroom and pool sessions take place right here at Harry’s Dive Shop. We are fortunate enough to have our own indoor, heated swimming pool, as well as a spacious classroom. Having our own pool provides us with several advantages.
- We can conduct pool sessions whenever it is convenient for students.
- Our instructors don’t have to shout to be heard over competing events.
- There is never any pressure to “hurry up and get out of the water before the next group gets here.”
<>pThe bottom line is, having our own pool helps our students learn better. It is just that simple. You can read more about our pool’s history at the bottom of this page.
Open Water Training
Atudents in Harry’s Dive Shop beginning scuba courses have the option to complete their open-water training dives on one of our group trips or on a vacation of their own. By far the most popular choice, however, is to accompany us on one of our many checkout dive weekends in the Florida Panhandle. Learn more…
A Pool With a History
The pool behind Harry’s Dive Shop in Metairie was built in 1976 by the late Harry Caldwell, his family, their friends and ultimately a local construction company.
It was designed with the sole purpose of diver training in mind. The 16-foot depth allows for training in neutral buoyancy (neither touching the bottom nor breaking the surface) and experience in the effects of water pressure. The drop-off from the shallow end to the deep end is steep enough to simulate descending down a boat’s anchor line. The graduated descent allows adequate time for a diver’s ears to adapt to increasing pressure.
Harry’s Dive Shop pool is also used in training of many other realms of water safety such as cold water survival, helicopter escape techniques, lifeguard training, basic water rescue and survival, etc. nationally known organizations such as Chevron Oil, Shell Oil, Mobil Oil, US Customs, US Department of the interior Minerals Management Agency, Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries, US Navy and the US Army Corps of Engineers, as well as the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office, New Orleans Police Department, and Aquarium of the Americas use our pool for in-water training exercises.
