While being observed putting captions on pictures of dive trips, I was asked how I knew which fish was which. The next question was, “How do you know what kind of fish it is so you know where to begin looking it up? ” Very good question…
We now offer a Fish Identification course covering game fish, tropical fish and several sharks in the Gulf of Mexico, Atlantic and Caribbean — with a special emphasis on our good buddy, the sea turtle.
When returning from a dive, you will know enough to speak intelligently about what you saw and you will know where to look to identify the fish. Learn to recognize shapes and behaviors of your underwater friends.
You will be amazed and challenged to learn characteristics of different fishes. Some are deep water dwellers while others stay shallow; some like sand and others the reef; some gather in schools and others are solitary; and lastly, some come out only at night. Learn which creatures to avoid and which you can safely interact with.
In preparation for taking a course you will absolutely love, try to define what makes a fish a fish. You will be amazed at how difficult a task this is.
