The key to great underwater photos and video is getting close and light; without using light, there is no color. When light penetrates into clear water at a perpendicular angle, it loses 50 percent of its surface brightness after 3.3 feet. This loss is caused by refraction, reflection, diffusion and the loss of color due to selective extinction (the general weakening of radiation).
Once your awareness and knowledge of these physical phenomena and the effect they have on photography and video increases, your ability to counter them will improve greatly. Learn some of the tried and proven methods learned through the efforts and experiences of other underwater photographers.
